Billabong Co Sligo Open

The Billabong Co Sligo Open, an Irish Surf Team selection and Irish
Championships Tour event, was hosted by Co Sligo Surf Club in Strandhill
last weekend. The event kicked of in small onshore surf on Saturday morning.
Heat continued until 9.30pm by which time the swell had picked up and the
wind had dropped. Sunday saw another six heats of competitions to finish the
event.

The Open final was a tight battle between local surfer, Stephen Kilfeather
and Belfast's Ronan Oertzen with Stephen's local knowledge paying off as he
was crowned Co Sligo Open Champion. Nicole Morgan stole a narrow victory
over Easkey Britton in the Women's event. Tramore's Craig Butler dominated
the Longboard event knocking the current Irish Champion, John Mc Curry out
of the event in the semis. Andrew Kilfeather and Suzanne Smith took the
bodyboard titles. The biggest upset of the event was thirteen year old Aaron
O'Hare, who progress all the way to the U18 final to finish 4th place.

The next event on the Irish Surfing Association Calendar is the final event
on the Billabong Rossnowlagh Junior Championships, the final event on the
Irish Junior Championships Tour on the 21/22 August.
